The New York City subway turned 100 yesterday and to celebrate the train’s centennial birthday, the M.T.A. opened its original City Hall station to the public for the day. The newly crowned Ms. Subway and Metropolitan Transportation Authority employees dressed in period clothing filled the station, which has not been used since 1945, and toured a refurbished vintage train car. Mayor Bloomberg – like Mayor George McClellan a century before him – took the helm of the four-car train along its original route: from City Hall station to 42nd St., to the surprise of daily commuters. The mayor was accompanied by Lt. Gov. Mary Donohue and M.T.A. chairperson Peter Kalikow on the 15-minute ride.
