* The Edenwald Construction Company began the renovation of Washington Sq. Park. The centerpiece of the renovation, which also included an adventure playground, volleyball court and amphitheater, was a raised central plaza that would lead to a newly reconstructed central fountain described as “similar to, but not as elaborate as the one at Lincoln Center.”

* Concern continued over the recent escape of 29 drug addicts from the Sheridan Narcotic Rehabilitation Center on Morton St., which opened in March. Many in the area complained of a rash of robberies and harassment. As of July 10, 16 residents had been returned to the Center; 13 were believed to have “fled the neighborhood,” according to police.
