Shorewalkers, the hiking and environmental advocacy group, will hold its 25th annual Great Saunter, 32 miles around Manhattan — along the shoreline as much as possible — on Sat., May 1.
The urban hiking event, which traverses 20 city parks, has attracted New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world over the past 25 years and has had the support of the Department of Parks, Mayor Bloomberg and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.
Shorewalkers will meet at the corner of Fulton and South Sts near the South St. Seaport at 7 a.m. and will step off on the Great Saunter at 7:30 a.m. heading south for the clockwise waterfront walk around the borough.
Walkers may join at various stops along the way — 9:45 a.m. at the Circle Line terminal at W. 42nd St.; 11 a.m. at the bus stop at the north end of Riverbank State Park at 145th St. atop the water-pollution control plant on the Hudson River; 1 p.m. at the flagpole at Inwood Park near the north end of Manhattan; 4 p.m. at E. 84th St. on the East River promenade on the south side of Carl Schurz Park.
The event, sometimes known as the Big Schlep, takes place rain or shine. It ends around 7 p.m. — or later, depending on how fast you walk — at the Heartland Brewery in the Seaport at Fulton and South Sts.
