Art saves, they pray

Edwin Torres, of the Committee to Save St. Brigid’s Church, auctioned an artwork at a benefit for the historic Avenue B church at Solas Bar, on E. Ninth St., on Sunday. The auction featured donated works by local artists, many of them of Irish descent. Last week, the committee released a letter, signed by Borough President Scott Stringer, Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Councilmember Rosie Mendez, Congressmember Nydia Velazquez, State Senator Martin Connor and Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, asking the Landmarks Preservation Commission to consider St. Brigid’s for landmark status. Comptroller William Thompson also wrote a letter this week to the commission requesting landmark review. State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Kapnick is currently reviewing the committee’s lawsuit against the archdiocese. A court-ordered stop-work order is preventing any demolition work on the church.
