Chinatown jewelry theft
Police arrested Osborne Davis, 47, last week and charged him with stealing a tray of 72 rings valued at $15 each from a store at 240 Canal at 12:45 p.m. Mon. July 25. The owner’s wife also told police that she was working in the shop around 8:25 p.m. on June 4 when she saw Davis lifting four handbags from a display rack and making off with them, according to the complaint filed with the Manhattan District Attorney. Davis was identified in a New York Post item as having served prison terms on previous assault and robbery convictions.
Naked on Wall St.
A man and two women who were among a performance group that gathered in front of the New York Stock Exchange at 7 a.m. Mon. Aug. 1 and stripped down to the skin, were arrested and issued summonses for disorderly conduct. The performers said their nakedness was a statement of the transparency they believed corporations should observe. Eric Anderson, 31, and Aaron Mattocks, 30, both of Brooklyn, and Christine Coleman, 22,of Queens, were the only ones arrested, apparently because they were in a high security area directly in front of the Exchange.
Stalker charged
Emanuel Popei, 40, was arrested July 18 and charged with harassing a woman by entering her Peck Slip apartment at 2:30 a.m. July 10 and telling her, “You’re killing me. I need to talk to you.” Between June 10 and July 13 when he was arrested, the defendant bombarded the woman with emails and text messages saying that he loved her, calling her a whore and threatening to harm himself. After he was arrested he emailed her from his cell phone threatening to tell the judge that he was her boyfriend and that she slept with men for money unless she dropped the charges. He is being held for burglary, stalking and witness tampering.
Teen muggers
A woman, 22, visiting from New Hampshire, told police she was walking east on Platt St. at Pearl St. while texting on her phone at 5:25 p.m. Thurs., July 28 when three teenagers approached walking towards her. One of them grabbed her phone and the other joined the struggle but the victim held on. When the phone dropped to the pavement, the suspects fled. They were apprehended a short time later when two of them, 15 years old, were charged as juveniles and one, 16, was charge with robbery as an adult.
Parking conflict
An attendant at the Edison Parking Garage at 272 Front St. got into an argument with the driver of Manhattan Mini Storage truck around 2:35 p.m. Mon., Aug. 1 when the truck driver parked at the location, police said. The truck driver picked up a dolly, hurled it at the attendant and hit him in the arm, and then fled on a bicycle, leaving the truck behind, police said.
Soho shoplifters
A man and a woman who walked into the Free People boutique at 99 Spring St. near Mercer St. around 7 p.m. Fri. July 29, managed to take 10 tank tops, eight maxi dresses and 10 pairs of skinny jeans, with a total value of $2,552, and walk away without paying for them, police said.
Police arrested a man running out of the Prince St. subway station on Broadway around 4:17 p.m. Thurs., July 28 and charged him with stealing 10 pairs of jeans from the Lucky Brand boutique at 535 Broadway. The suspect told police that he was headed to the Guess boutique across the street.
Tribeca thefts
Two men walked into the Duane Reade at 352 Greenwich St. near Harrison St. at 7:42p.m. Sun., July 31 and managed to tuck dozens of cold medicines, pregnancy tests and other items with a total value of $2,682 into two shopping bags and walk out without paying for them, police said.
A woman shopping at Payless Shoes, 187 Broadway near Dey St. around 6:50 p.m. Thurs., July 28, left her wallet on a counter in the shop and discovered 10 minutes later that it had been stolen. An employee said later that he saw a man pick up the wallet and walk out of the store.
Pickpockets
A woman who got on a crowded train at Union Sq. at 9:45 a.m. Fri., July 29 told police she discovered her wallet had been stolen from her bag as she was leaving the Bowling Green subway station. She recalled the last time she saw the wallet was at the Brooklyn Bridge station when she put her magazine in her bag, She discovered that unauthorized charges had been made on her credit cards at Duane Reade and Walgreens branches.
A pickpocket dipped into the bag of a victim as she was riding the escalator up from the Whitehall St. subway station around 7:15 p.m. Sun., July 31, grabbed the victim’s cellphone and fled, police said.
Bikes and cycle
A Bronx man, 57, who parked and locked his Bianchi bicycle valued at $1,600 at a rack at 186 Front St and 11 a.m. Sat. July 30, came back 20 minutes later and found the cycle and the lock gone.
A resident of 80 N. Moore St. in Independence Plaza parked his black Kawasaki Ninja model motorcycle in front of the building at 5 p.m. after coming home from work and discovered at 3 p.m. the next day that the 2009 bike valued at $5,000 had been stolen.
A Bronx man who works in Battery Park City parked his red Honda motorcycle on North End Ave at Murray St. at 6 a.m. Mon., Aug. 1 and discovered it missing when he returned eight hours later, police said.
A resident of 250 West St. between Hubert and Laight Sts. parked his Vespa mo-ped in front of his building around 8 p.m. Thurs., July 28 and returned to it at 10a.m. the next day to find it had been stolen, police said.
