Astros vs. Reds, majors
The Astros improved their record to 2-0, beating the Reds by a final score of 11-8 Sunday in Downtown Little League action. Luke Shapiro pitched well for the Astros as well as helping his cause at the plate. Shapiro pitched four innings, striking out six and giving up only one hit and two walks. He also had two key hits, including a deep drive to center field for a triple. Luke’s brother Jake was the other leading hitter, with two solid base hits. Wyatt Leach and Sam Fishman also contributed timely hits.
Astros catcher Zane Holmes had a professional looking tag at the plate and Cal Cook continued his gold glove performance this season with a dazzling play at shortstop turning back the Reds early in the game. The Astros led 7-0 before the Reds bats came alive in the last two innings and fought back to make it a close game. Sam Levine had the hot bat and Nicky Morton pitched a great game in relief for the Reds.
Rockies vs. Giants, majors
The Giants beat the Rockies 13-3. For the Giants, Sam Gilberg pitched well with eight strikeouts and no walks. Luke Gerhorsam, Gilberg and Eben Cooper turned a nice 4-6-3 double play, and Max Sternberg had three R.B.I. Ryan Rakower of the Rockies had three hits including a home run, and Felix Chmiel and Matt Weinstein had strong pitching performances.
Batteries vs. Powder Kegs, girls’ softball
The Powder Kegs won against the Batteries, with a final score of 3-2, in a close game that was fun for both sides Saturday. Sarah Boyd pitched for the Batteries and did a great job the first couple of innings. The Batteries’ first basewoman Caroline Rauffenbart helped make a number of outs. Pitcher Miranda Watson also did a great job on the mound. Some good defensive fielding was shown by Jessica Consalvo, and Bridget Doherty had a nice base hit. This is the first season for many of the Powder Kegs. Lindsay Holcomb pitched a shutout for the first two innings and worked through a bases loaded situation. In the bottom of the first, the Powder Kegs scored two runs on a combination of hits and walks by Greta Jenkins and Emma Dries. Sarah McGowan and Mackenzie Mackie Charter knocked in runs. Sarah McGowan pitched innings three and four giving up one run while working through a bases-loaded no out situation. Sarah ended the 4th inning with a line drive catch on a ball hit back to the pitcher. Aimee Chico closed out the final inning giving up one run on two hits and two walks. Madeline Steinberg made a run saving play at second base to end the inning. With the game tied in the bottom of the fifth, the Powder Kegs opened with a double from Mackie Charter followed by a game winning R.B.I. by Aimee Chico.
Mariners vs. Athletics, minors
It was a close game until the Mariners scored five runs in the last inning, and won 14-4 over the Athletics. After two innings, the Mariners led 7-4. Mariner Michael Herman pitched three strong innings. Tommy Nellen was the Mariners’ starting catcher and played great defense, coming in for the last inning as the closer. Emmet Smith was the Mariners’ lead off hitter for the last two games and was on base all four times he was up. Mariner Miguel Leiro threw out a runner at third base from centerfield and was also on base all three times he was up. First baseman Oren Shore, nicknamed “the vacuum cleaner,” played super defense for the Mariners and caught every ball thrown to him.
