The First Annual Kids’ Art Bike Ride for the Lower East Side cut a path of fun-filled, nonpolluting creativity through the East Village on Saturday. Sponsored by the East Village Community Coalition, the event highlighted the importance of safe spaces for children of the Lower East Side to cycle, skate and play. Joining the kids along the 30-minute parade route near Tompkins Square Park were honorary sponsors Congressmember Nydia Velazquez, who rode her bike in from her home in Brooklyn; former Councilmember Margarita Lopez, now a commissioner at the New York City Housing Authority, above; and Councilmember Rosie Mendez, who rode in a pedicab.
