Two pols Monday called on Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio to bring Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s schtick to the rest of the city as its ambassador.
Incoming Public Advocate Letitia James and Brooklyn City Councilman David Greenfield said Markowitz should lead the mayor’s Office of International Affairs as the “Ambassador for NYC.” The job would make Markowitz the city’s liaison to foreign governments and the United Nations and an advisor on diplomatic matters. He would be charged with helping international companies do business in New York.
“It would be fitting for him to represent the city of New York as ambassador,” James said.
As borough president for the last 12 years, “Party Marty” was known for promoting Brooklyn as a cultural rival to Manhattan, cheering major developments like Atlantic Yards and Barclays Center, hosting free concert series and issuing pun-filled quips on any given topic.
Markowitz, through a spokesman, said he looked forward to serving in “whatever role I may take” after life in borough hall for the past 12 years.
“It is flattering that two of my colleagues in government would think of me in such esteem,” Markowitz said in a statement.
A spokeswoman for de Blasio’s transition declined to comment.
