A grand jury has handed up an indictment against a Brooklyn Criminal Court officer on charges that he coerced a woman into performing a sex act in a public stairwell last year, authorities said.

Timothy Nolan, 58, of Lake Grove was released without bail Monday after being arraigned before state Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun in Brooklyn on charges of official misconduct, second-degree coercion, public lewdness and exposure of a person. He is due back in court Oct. 4.

The alleged victim held a news conference with her attorney in downtown Brooklyn on Monday to say that she was happy the case was proceeding and may go to trial, the attorney said.

Nolan faces up to a year in jail if convicted on the coercion and misconduct charges, according to Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.

“What this defendant – a public servant – allegedly did was a disgrace to his fellow court officers who day in and day out serve the public with respect and work hard to keep our courthouses safe,” Gonzalez said in a news release. “He allegedly abused his authority to exploit a young woman who needed assistance in order to gratify himself. Such conduct will not be tolerated and we will now seek to hold him accountable for this despicable act.”

Gonzalez said Nolan noticed the alleged victim in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Oct. 21, 2016, as she waited in a hallway to post bail for her boyfriend. Prosecutors said that Nolan told the victim that he would help her boyfriend’s case in exchange for sexual favors – and that the case would be negatively affected if she didn’t comply with his demands.

“The defendant allegedly grabbed the victim by the hair, fondled and attempted to kiss her as she performed a sex act on him,” Gonzalez said in the news release.

A spokeswoman for the Office of Court Administration said Nolan has been suspended without pay.

His attorney, Michael Cibella of Manhattan, could not be reached for comment.

The alleged victim appeared at a news conference of her own at the Court Street office of attorney Sanford Rubenstein to say she spoke out about the case to prevent it from happening to other people, Rubenstein said.

“This indictment of Timothy Nolan demonstrates that when one is in a position of authority, whatever position you are in, and that authority is abused and used for unlawful purposes a grand jury will indict you and charge you with serious crimes for which you will have to stand trial and if convicted face serious jail time,” Rubenstein said.
