City College to move school to Bowling Green

The City College Center for Worker Education will move this August from 99 Hudson St. to the Wall St. area near Bowling Green Park, school administrators say.

“The move was not a matter of if, but when,” said Elena Romero, C.W.E.’s communications director. “We’ve outgrown our old space.”

The future move to 25 Broadway isn’t completely voluntary, however. The C.W.E.’s current landlord refused to renew the lease because new condos will be built in its place. Nevertheless, Romero and the school’s dean, Daniel E. Lemons, say that they’re excited about the new location, the historic Cunnard Building.

The new space will have larger classrooms, a coffee and snack bar, state-of-the-art technology, and is a better transportation juncture, said Romero.

The C.W.E, a CUNY school, was established in 1981. It offers, among other things, a bachelor degree program designed for working adults with busy schedules. Initially, the Center got off the ground with strong support and encouragement from labor unions and employers, and these remain sources of support.
