Earlier, the NYPD had tweeted that it was investigating the threat at about 10 p.m. CNN anchor Don Lemon said on air that the caller had said there were five bombs in the building. "The threat has not been substantiated at this time; we’re on scene performing a comprehensive sweep-and-search of the facility," the NYPD had tweeted at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday's evacuation prompted Lemon to go on air with the help of Skype, and CNN tweeted that the network had gone temporarily to taped programming. At one point it showed Anderson Cooper's show. "We have been taken off the air because a bomb threat has been called in," Lemon said as he reported with colleagues outside the building off Columbus Circle shortly after 11:15 p.m. The evacuation and impromptu, cold-air reporting were reminiscent of the drama in October, when pipe bombs were mailed to CNN and other critics of President Donald Trump. In the pipe bomb cases, an outspoken Trump supporter, Cesar Altieri Sayoc Jr., 56, was arrested Oct. 26 outside an auto parts store near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lemon bemoaned the state of the times as he prepared to go back inside and said people going back in were being checked by police: "It's still a mess. It's still sad. These are the times we're living in."
