The Downtown Giants played hard in their first football game Saturday at Murry Bergtraum field, said head coach Robert Kolb.
“This is the first time that our kids have had football in years,” Kolb said.
Although the team suffered a defeat to the Brooklyn Falcons in its first game (Kolb declined to say the score), the players and coaches are looking forward to the next game against the Mariners this Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Mariner’s home field in Brooklyn.
Kolb said about 95 percent of the kids were from Battery Park City with a few from Tribeca and the Lower East Side.
The league is for kids 11,12, and 13 years old. Kolb said registration ended on Aug. 31. “We’re pretty settled, but I wouldn’t turn kids away,” he said.
