Last week, to neighbors’ dismay, workers started dismantling the two historic smokestacks at the old Superior Ink building on West St. between Bethune and W. 12th Sts. David Wine, vice chairperson of Related Companies, which plans to build a new residential building on the site, said that, for now, they’re only taking down the smokestacks. “It’s just something we decided to do first,” he said, though adding that the rest of the building will eventually be demolished. “It’s going to happen over time,” he assured.
