Officials: 2 die, 3 in hospital after boat capsizes in Jamaica Bay

Two people have died after being rescued from the choppy waters of Jamaica Bay on Friday night when their boat capsized off Floyd Bennett Field in southeast Brooklyn, police said.

Five people were rescued, and the two who died had been taken to Beth Israel Medical Center in critical condition after being pulled from the water, an NYPD spokesman said.

An FDNY spokesman said three others were taken to Coney Island Hospital in stable condition after first responders combed the marshy shoreline and marine units searched the bay looking for the five who went overboard.

The fire department received the call at 7:45 p.m., the spokesman said. All those who were rescued suffered varying degrees of hypothermia, and other injuries -- some were found on land and some were plucked from the water.

Further details about the victims, the type of boat involved and what caused it to capsize were not immediately known, the spokesman said.
