Five people were injured, and one trapped resident was rescued, during a harrowing Brighton Beach blaze Tuesday night.

Fire Department officials say more than 100 smoke eaters arrived at 3033 Brighton 13th St. just after 9:10 pm on March 8 to find heavy fire and smoke billowing out of the four-story building near Ocean View Avenue. First responders also observed residents on the third floor fire escape attempting to flee.

Members of Ladder Company 161 assisted the residents down a portal ladder, and rescued an additional trapped civilian, as the fire continued to rage.

Firefighting operations were hampered by a car parked at the closest hydrant. To establish a stable water supply, first responders had to run a fire hose over the hood of the vehicle. FDNY personnel eventually used two hose lines to knock down the fire.

In total, five residents were injured and two apartments were heavily damaged. One person was rescued from inside the unit. There were no other people found trapped inside the charred apartments.

The fire was placed under control at about 10:40 pm.

The FDNY’s fire marshal’s office will determine the cause of the fire.

The building is nearly a century old, built in 1926, according to property records.
