The New York County Lawyers’ Association has organized a free public forum, “The Selection and Election of State Judges: Recent Developments,” on Monday, Nov. 29, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at 14 Vesey St.
Panelists will discuss the recommendations of the Feerick Commission, which was a response to Lopez Torres vs. the New York Board of Elections. The pending trial puts the spotlight on the current convention system, deemed “unconstitutional” by the plaintiff because it denies voters the right to elect judges.
Panelists will also discuss pending legislation that seeks to create political-party appointed judicial panels.
N.Y.C. Councilman Stanley Michels, Prof. Bert Neuborne of N.Y.U. Law School, former justice of the Appellate Division Ernst Rosenberger, and the Feerick Commission’s legal counsel Michael Sweeney will be part of the panel. Prof. Richard Briffault of Columbia University Law School will moderate the discussion.
