The Friends of LaGuardia Pl. will hold its 13th annual party from 6-9 p.m. Tues. Oct. 21 at Tiro a Segno, 77 MacDougal St., commemorating the 70th anniversary of Fiorello LaGuardia’s inauguration as mayor of New York.
The Friends will present its LaGuardia Medallion to Elizabeth Margaritis Butson, publisher emeritus of The Villager, “for her constant and dedicated service to our neighborhood and it diverse community,” and to Peter C. DeLuca, owner of Perazzo Funeral Home, “for his continuing and untiring work in improving the LaGuardia Pl. Garden.”
The Friends, organized in 1986 by residents and business neighbors to improve the tract of land along LaGuardia Pl. between W. Third and Bleecker Sts., lobbied for the construction of a park and commissioned the sculptor, Neil Estern, to create the heroic-size (slightly larger than life-size) statue of LaGuardia that was erected on the site in 1988.
Last year, Friends of LaGuardia Pl. presented the LaGuardia Medallion to Sophie Gerson and former Councilmember Kathryn Freed.
