Legendary Brazilian photographer Sebastio Salgado — known for chronicling the lives of the world’s dispossessed and workers — was honored last week by the National Arts Club on Gramercy Park S., which presented him with its 13th Annual Gold Medal Award for Photography. At left in photo at left, Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone publisher, who spoke at the dinner, with Salgado. At right, actor Gabriel Byrne at the cocktail reception. Among some of Salgado’s most famous photo series are of streams of mud-covered laborers carrying sacks of sediment on their backs up ladders in the Serra Pelada, Brazil, gold mine; oil well workers and firefighters in Kuwait after the Persian Gulf War; and the Ethiopian famine.
