The Lower East Side Girls Club threw its Willow Awards gala and benefit at Capitale at Bowery and Grand St. on Nov. 17, marking the public kickoff of the club’s $10 million capital campaign to build a clubhouse on Avenue D. The Girls Club presented Mayor Bloomberg with their “Boyfriend of the Year 2003 Award” in gratitude for his helping them secure the property. This year’s Inspiration Award went to Rebecca Hoffberger, director and founder of the American Visionary Arts Museum. The Girls Club’s stated mission is to “provide a place where girls aged 8 to 18 can grow, learn and gain confidence in themselves and their ability to make a difference in the world.”
