There’s no official team name, and girls don’t even have to join the league to play, but there is now a venue for girls ages 10-14 years old to play softball in the fall Downtown.
Last Sunday morning at 9 a.m., the Downtown girls, some from the Downtown Little League’s spring softball league, played against Yorkville, which won 14-7. Early on, the Downtowners’ Mikayla Toffler made two outstanding plays at third base, before she belted a solo shot for Downtown’s first home run of the fall season. In the bottom half of the third, behind the strong pitching of Julia Winnick and trailing 2-1, Yorkville erupted for 5 runs on a bases-clearing double. Downtown added five more runs and despite a solid relief appearance on the mound from Samantha Sewell, Yorkville’s experienced pitching staff proved to be the difference.
The Downtowners are hoping more girls come out to play on Saturdays through the fall from 11:00 a.m. – 1 p.m. in East River Park near 10th St.
