The eighth annual New York City event marking International GoTopless Day was independent of but coincided with the apparent proliferation of topless women wearing body paint and posing for photos in exchange for tips in Times Square. In years past, topless advocates have held a rally; this year is the first with a march. It is legal for men and women to be topless in public in New York City, but the demonstrators sought to remove the stigma of women who doff their shirts. They said women should not feel ashamed to breastfeed and toplessness encourages positive body image. “If men can do it, then women can do it,” Nickii Raynor, 18, of Shoreham said of toplessness.
