After hopes for a new home fell through, the folks at New York City Greenmarket are once again without a plaza to purvey their goods near the World Trade Center site. The W.T.C. greenmarket must move from its current location outside the PATH terminal at the corner of Church and Vesey Sts because the Port Authority must construct the permanent Calatrava-designed station on the site.
The Greenmarket team had been optimistic that they would be able to relocate to the plaza outside 7 W.T.C., a space owned by Silverstein Properties. But after 7 W.T.C. did an emergency evacuation drill, Silverstein and the Fire Dept. determined that the market’s tents on the sidewalks would pose a safety hazard.
At a Community Board 1 meeting Monday night, board members vowed to help the Greenmarket set up a meeting with Brookfield Properties to explore the possibility of bringing the market back to Brookfield’s Liberty St. plaza, between Church St. and Broadway. The plaza hosted the market after 9/11 and before it went to the PATH terminal.
