Crain’s New York Business reports Home Depot will open its first Manhattan store next summer in the Flatiron District in the old Stern’s department store at 28-40 W. 23rd St. between Fifth and Sixth Aves., with entrances on both 22nd and 23rd Sts. The three-level store will be 108,000 sq. ft., featuring a street-level showroom, a lower-level retail floor and a mezzanine, and will devote several thousand square feet to completely outfitted rooms, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
Chelsea Democratic District Leader Kathy Kinsella said there are concerns about delivery issues, particularly on 22nd St., but that it was admittedly originally a department store area.
“I don’t think there has been much opposition nor has there been much awareness of it,” she said of the Home Depot. At various times between last winter and this spring, a Home Depot was rumored as being a possible big box tenant at Pier 40 at W. Houston St., before redevelopment proposals for the pier went through revisions and the process was aborted.
