Most dynasties take decades to build. But the I.S. 89 Cougars have only existed for three years and they have already won their first Manhattan Middle School Championship.

On Tuesday they beat East Side Middle School, 5-4, and travel to play the Bronx Champs from JHS 145 on Thursday.

“I think they’re ready,” said Toni Robinson, whose son Ledell Robinson, an eighth grader at I.S. 89 scored the winning run on Tuesday. “I don’t think they’re scared.”

The championship game came down to the final inning. The Cougars were the visiting team and batted first in the last inning. Robinson got on base with a line drive double and then was driven home by Jake Kiehl.

The Cougars’ closer, Zak Kraehling struck out the first two ESM batters and then I.S. 89’s defense did the rest.
