The girls I.S. 89 basketball team split their last two games, winning their game last Thursday, followed by a defeat on Tuesday. Thursday’s match, March 4, was a home game against Ice, and I.S. 89 won big, 25-11. The girls were up 7-1 after the first quarter, which let them turn to their bench early. The team is made up of sixth, seventh and eighth graders, all of which had a chance to play against Ice. This is only the second time this season that Alex Lee, the girls I.S. 89 coach, has tried the rotation approach. The top scorers of the game with six points each, were Vickie Smith, Kathryn Kozma, eighth graders, and Jenny Yu, a sixth grader. On Tuesday the team lost to School of the Future, 29-35. Lee, who coaches the team for Manhattan Youth, said the match was shaky from the start with three original starters unable to attend Tuesday’s match, which hurt the team’s confidence. Lee said Jenny Yu controlled the pace of the game and was also one of the top scorers with 8 points, Kathryn Kozma scored 10 points and Tricia Fratta hit two 3-pointers shots and one regular basket.
