J'Ouvert festival: Photos of the early morning Caribbean celebration

Stepped-up security and more daylight hours didn't dampen the spirit of the J'Ouvert festival in Brooklyn on Monday.

J'Ouvert, which celebrates Caribbean culture and signals the start of Carnival, precedes the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn each Labor Day.

Known for its colorful costumes and steel drum bands, J'Ouvert comes from the French jour ouvert, meaning day break or morning.
