Jeanne Tregre, a longtime resident of the Gramercy-Stuyvesant Park neighborhood and president for three decades of the 13th Precinct Community Council, died Sun., June 5, at the age of 74.
Although diagnosed with a form of leukemia five years ago, she continued to be active as a community leader and had been making arrangements for the June 25 Community Council Second Ave. Street Fair when she died, according to Gail Fox, a friend for the past 30 years.
Her funeral on June 9 at Immaculate Conception Church on E. 14th St. was crowded with community leaders, police representatives and friends.
In addition to her precinct community council work, she ran the volunteer family circle group of the Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home on E. 72nd St. and York Ave., helping residents and their families, according to Carol Schachter, chairperson of Community Board 6 and a friend of many years.
Jeanne Tregre was also a diligent advocate for neighborhood parks and in the 1960s was active in the Sweet 14 campaign of the 14th St. Union Sq. Local Development Corporation, the nonprofit group that organized the business improvement district.
Henry Stern, former Parks and Recreation commissioner, recalled Tregre’s work as a parks advocate. “She was forceful and reasonable, the kind of advocacy that gets things done,” Stern said.
Jeanne Tregre was born in Manhattan and attended high school at Holy Child Academy then located at 158th St. and Riverside Dr., according to Daniel Sullivan, a nephew. She earned a B.A. at St. John’s University and worked for many years as an account executive with J. Walter Thompson.
Sorcae Funeral Home of West Nyack, N.Y., was in charge of arrangements.
