After last year’s sold-out debut, New York’s Best Emerging Jewish Artists returns next week to the Museum of Jewish Heritage, featuring a variety show of filmmakers, musicians, comedians, and even a quizmaster. The show is co-sponsored by the Young Friends of the Museum, a group of 20 and 30-somethings representing the third generation of Jews, or grand-children of immigrants to America, many of whom were Holocaust survivors.
The building’s three floors, divided by historical era, include Jewish Life A Century Ago, The War Against the Jews, and on the top floor, Jewish Renewal. Along these lines, the party culminates with an after-party on the top floor, overlooking the Hudson River and Ellis Island.
While the symbolism of survival and triumph in the new world is inescapable, the occasionally off-color artists never take it too seriously. The night’s host, comedian Seth Herzog, playfully quipped, “It is really just about sex if you want to boil it down. People can meet and make little Jewish babies.” Growing only slightly serious, he added, “Which fits what the museum is about. People wanted to wipe us out, but they didn’t, and we continue on for generations.” Following is our guide to this year’s performers.
