Manhattan Youth has opened a free Friday night gameroom for March in P.S. 234’s cafeteria to give Downtowners a small sample of the recreation center it plans to open in the fall on the same block as the school at Greenwich and Warren St. The youth group had opened the game room to siblings of second and third graders playing in the group’s Friday night basketball league, but decided to open the room up to all Downtown children for four Friday nights in March from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Synagogue for the Arts, Tribeca Hebrew, Battery Park Synagogue and the Jewish Community Project Downtown preschool came together at P.S. 234 Sunday for a Purim carnival. Many girls came already dressed as Queen Esther, the Jewish holiday’s hero, and others made a costume at the event, which also featured music and a theatrical performance of the Purim Megillah with a “Grease” theme. The festive holiday marks the Jews’ escape from annihilation at the hands of Haman in the fifth century B.C.E.

The game room includes a foosball table and special events are planned each week. Opening night last Friday was a bingo tournament. March 9 will be board game night; March 16, “the Great Connect Four Challenge”; and March 23 is Wii sports interactive games.
In 2001, the group opened a temporary teen center on Warren St., but had to close in 2004 because of rising rents and a need to focus on raising money for a larger permanentt center
