Mayor Mike Bloomberg said last week that New York University and other city colleges are hesitant about opening a campus on Governors Island because they like being a part of the city and don’t want to wall themselves off like universities in other urban areas.
He said city streets make up part of N.Y.U.’s campus and that Governors Island’s “advantage is it is isolated. That’s also a disadvantage.”
The mayor and Governor George Pataki released a request for proposals for development ideas for the 172-acre island just off Lower Manhattan last Wednesday. The mayor and governor said in 2003 that the City University of New York would open a campus on the island, but that plan stalled.
