The Gottlieb real estate company is tearing down a former refrigerated warehouse at the southeast corner of W. 14th St. and Tenth Ave. The three-story building was damaged in a fire several years ago.
Andrew Berman, executive director of Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, said the property, 48-56 Tenth Ave., was actually several buildings built as houses in the 1840s that later became cold-storage buildings and were joined in 1949.
Jennifer Givner, a Department of Buildings spokesperson, said no demolition permit had been filed with D.O.B., and that the only permit issued was for repair of fire damage. She said a violation was issued Jan. 21 for “work not conforming to approved plans.” She said no plans are on file for any new construction.
The site is located outside the recently designated Gansevoort Market Historic District.
