Metropolitan Playhouse receives grants

The Metropolitan Playhouse has received two grants totaling $3,700 from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council to improve the playhouse at 220 E. Fourth St. and to support a neighborhood history project, “Alphabet City: An Oral History of the Lower East Side.”

As part of the history project, performers will interview residents of the neighborhood to create monologues about the lives of residents and their perspectives on the neighborhood. The actor-writers then will present the monologues in a series of stage presentations next year. The season will also include 10 new historical plays.

The L.M.C.C. grant will also pay for a permanent sign outside the E. Fourth St. building that the Metropolitan Playhouse shares with the Connelly Theater.
