Residential neighbors of the Hotel Gansevoort, which opened less than a year ago on Ninth Ave. in the Gansevoort Market District, have been complaining about a constant noise that can be heard from as far as two blocks away.
One neighbor described it as “a dull but unceasing roar,” and began complaining in December to the city Department of Environmental Protection. Effie Miller of Horatio St. said the noise became noticeable last summer.
D.E.P. responded and sent an inspector on Jan. 11 who found “excessive noise from a kitchen exhaust device.” The inspector issued a violation with a hearing date of Feb. 23 at the Environmental Control Board at 66 John St.
But neighbors said this week that the noise hasn’t stopped. One resident anonymously passed out yellow fliers urging people to continue their complaints. “New York is noisy enough without this mind-mauling, never-ceasing noise,” said Miller.
The 187-room luxury hotel at 18 Ninth Ave., on a triangular site bound also by 13th and Gansevoort Sts., opened in March of last year. The hotel management did not return phone calls for comment on the matter.
Noise violations like the one found at the Hotel Gansevoort on Jan. 11 are subject to fines of between $210 and $525, according to a D.E.P. spokesperson.
