Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, is remembered around the world as a leader of the anti-apartheid movement and as a civil rights hero.

Born on July 18, 1918, Mandela lived to be 95 years old. He died in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Dec. 5, 2013.
