Cars and bikes whiz by, dogs attempt to establish a place of business, and, occasionally, a pedestrian wreaks havoc with their work — but it neither deters nor distracts the volunteers who’ve adopted those between-lane islands lining Eighth and Ninth Avenues. Meet the people who’ve managed to sandwich plots of nature between strips of concrete, when you join the Chelsea Garden Club on their Tree Pit Tour.
Sat. July 18. The route covers Eighth Ave. to 30th St., then and west to Ninth Ave., south down to about 17th St. with a loop back to Eighth, then north, finishing at 23rd. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at 23rd St. & Seventh Ave. in front of the Papaya hot dog shop (or sleep in and meet at 10 a.m. at 23rd St. & Eighth Ave. in front of Dallas BBQ). Or, just look for the large group of people staring at a tree pit.
