Even as police worked to crack down on gun violence this Labor Day weekend, 13 people were injured by gunfire in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan between Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

Five people alone — including a 6-year-old boy — were shot and wounded at a Brooklyn party related to an unofficial celebration of J’Ouvert early Monday morning. Meanwhile, a 62-year-old man was shot to death in what’s believed to be a domestic dispute in Brooklyn.

The party shooting happened at about 2:54 a.m. on Sept. 7 in the area of Nostrand Avenue and Montgomery Street in Crown Heights. The 6-year-old boy was struck in the leg, while four adults were injured — a 47-year-old woman hit in the foot, a 40-year-old man also hit in the foot, a 45-year-old struck in the right leg and a 34-year-old man also struck in the leg.

Police were within earshot of the bullets flying and quickly responded. Officers acted fast to stabilize the boy on the ground, his mother wailing in tears as the child screamed in agony.

Two men were taken into custody at the scene, and both were said to have been in possession of guns, police reported.

Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison, who was on the scene this morning, said the shooting may have been “gang-related,” having nothing to do with the revelers.

All the victims were rushed to Kings County Hospital and are expected to survive.

It was the only J’Ouvert-related shooting of the night, as members of the GodSquad and other stop-the-violence groups fanned out throughout the borough to convince people to put down their guns.

Both the official J’Ouvert and West Indian Day celebrations were canceled due to COVID-19 crowd restrictions.

Up until midnight Sept. 6, there had been 17 people shot during the Labor Day weekend, three of those were homicides. There were seven people shot last year in the same time period, police officials revealed.

The violence was squelched somewhat by massive police presence in the West Indian communities in East Flatbush and Crown Heights.

As promised last week, the NYPD saturated the area with police officers standing watched at nearly every corner of Church Avenue and along Eastern Parkway.

Police also shut down two huge unauthorized parties, one on Ditmas Avenue and Rockaway Parkway in East Flatbush in a fenced-in parking lot and another in a parking lot on Flatlands Avenue and East 56th Street in Flatlands, Brooklyn.

Attendees paid an admission to enjoy booze and music, but police shut it down before 11 p.m. Sunday after receiving local complaints of the pay-for-play parties that were illegal and did not comply with active pandemic-related restrictions.

The lone homicide of the evening occurred at 7:34 a.m. where a 62-year-old man was shot in the head and body at 653 74th St. in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He was pronounced dead at NYU Langone Hospital.
