New York City Marble Cemetery, founded in 1831 on Second St. between First and Second Aves. will open its gates to the public for the first time in living memory this weekend.
The wrought-iron gate will be open for visitors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sun., Nov. 2, according to Colleen Iverson, director of the historic burial ground. The Veteran Corps of Artillery, a ceremonial color guard dressed in 1812 uniforms, will take part in a ceremony that begins at 2 p.m.
New York City Marble Cemetery is a designated city landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is often confused with the New York Marble Cemetery, founded in 1831 around the corner at 411/2 Second Ave. between Second and Third Sts.
