Paving the way in Tompkins Square

Neighbors and friends of Tompkins Square Park will gather around the Temperance Fountain in the park at 1 p.m. Sat. Jan. 28 to celebrate the second setting of 50 personal paving stones in the Make Your Mark in the Park program.

The program, initiated by the East Village Parks Conservancy and implemented by the city Department of Parks and Recreation, allows anyone or any group to have an 8-inch hexagonal granite paver with up to 70 characters cut into it and set in the ground around the fountain for a $250 donation.

The donation, minus the cost of the 2-inch-thick stone paver and the engraving, benefits Tompkins Square Park. The first 24 granite hexagons were set around the Temperance Fountain to replace existing asphalt pavers last May.
