Positively 5th St.: So long Sin Sin; Hello ‘Lucky’ pole
At left, workers removed the sign from Sin Sin lounge at Fifth St. and Second Ave. Tuesday morning. The bar had long been a target of neighbors’ complaints because of loud noise and rowdiness. Pressure mounted to close the trouble spot after Devin Thompson, 37, was shot twice on the sidewalk outside the place on Aug. 22 by two men who had been inside the club. He died nine days later. At right, Jim Power, the East Village’s “Mosaic Man,” was working in his basement studio nearby. His latest project is his “American Gangster” street lamppost, which is at St. Mark’s Place and First Ave., near the new Museum of the American Gangster. Power is shown holding up a piece of mesh with the beginnings of a Lucky Luciano tile mosaic which will be incorporated into the pole. (So that’s how he does it!)
