The East Village’s Jim “Mosaic Man” Power was one of the honorees at City Lore’s Ninth Annual People’s Hall of Fame Awards, on Nov. 18 at the Museum of the City of New York on Fifth Ave. The awards, in the form of giant tokens, honor grassroots contributions to New York City’s folk culture. City Lore chose Power on the basis of his “beautifying the city with distinctive, artful mosaics on lampposts and other features of the urban environment for the past 20 years.” Wearing fatigues at the ceremony, Power, a Vietnam veteran, spoke about supporting the Marines and the military in Iraq and how he’s made personal sacrifices to work on his 80-lamppost trail. Since losing his St. Mark’s Pl. apartment earlier this year, he’s been homeless. Above, he proudly displayed his award on Avenue A.
