Murder trial set
Michael Brown is scheduled to go on trial for murder before Criminal Court Judge James A. Yates on Thurs. March 16 in connection with the Sept. 21, 2005 shooting death of Thomas McKinney in front of Mission Bar and Lounge on Bowery and Rivington St.
The early morning shooting occurred on the street after an argument that started inside the bar about a spilled drink that involved four women who were with Brown and McKinney. A homeless man, Jeffrey Dudley, who was lying on the sidewalk near Mission Bar and Lounge was injured in the shooting.
Baby left in van
First Precinct police spotted a baby girl, 7 months old, left alone in a van parked at Rector St. on Trinity Pl. at 6:15 a.m. Fri. March 3 and took the infant to New York Downtown Hospital. “Where’s my baby?” said the child’s mother, Nelly Guangatel, 31, of 1121 Willoughby Ave., Brooklyn, when she returned later that morning. She told police that she had been “running errands and delivering newspapers.” She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Soho car break-in
A motorist who left his car in a parking garage at 81 Grand St. between Wooster and Greene Sts. on Sat. March 11 returned that night to find that several pieces of luggage had been stolen from the trunk, police said. There was no sign that the truck had been forced open, police said.
Soho slashing
A woman walking on Wooster St. near Grand St. on Sunday evening March 12 was pushed to the ground from behind by a mugger who tried to snatch her handbag, police said. The suspect, described only as a black man, then pulled a knife, slashed the victim’s arm and threatened the victim and several passersby with more harm before he fled, police said.
Pickpocket arrest
A Manhattan South Grand Larceny Task Force officer patrolling Canal St. near Wooster St. on Saturday evening March 11 arrested a woman he observed dipping into a pedestrian’s handbag, police said. Officer Shaun Gumbs arrested Sabrina Brown, 40, and brought her to the First Precinct to be charged with grand larceny.
Hanover Sq. car theft
A man who parked his car at the curb on Pearl and Hanover Sts. on Wed. March 8 returned in the early afternoon and found that it was gone, police said.
Locker room theft
A woman patron of New York Sports Club, 160 Water St., told police on Wednesday evening March 8 that her wallet with $80 in cash, several credit cards, driver’s license and Social Security card was stolen from her locker in the club’s women’s locker room.
