Ferry terminal beating
An off-duty firefighter was severely beaten at the Staten Island ferry terminal around 1:30 a.m. Mon., Sept. 7 in a dispute with a woman and two men who fled the scene, police said.
Matthew Dugan, 34, a firefighter assigned to Engine 15 near the South St. Seaport, was taken to New York Downtown Hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery to relieve pressure on the brain that followed the beating. His condition was improving Wednesday, according to a spokesperson.
Dugan and his girlfriend had been drinking at a Lower Manhattan bar Sunday night and were walking to the ferry terminal when his girlfriend tripped and fell, according to news reports. Three passersby, described as two black men and a black woman, began laughing, Dugan exchanged words with them and the suspects responded. It was not known who threw the first punch. Dugan’s girlfriend was not hurt in the melee. Police are investigating the case and there have been no arrests.
Suspect arrested
Police arrested Alexander Corchado, 61, on Sun., Aug. 30 after he attacked a woman in front of her apartment on Henry St. near Chatham Sq. A retired police officer had seen the assault and called police who arrested the suspect on Mott St. He is believed to be involved in two similar incidents and was charged with attempted robbery, burglary and attempted sexual abuse.
Hudson Sq, mugger
A woman, 35, was walking on Hudson St. near Broome St. at 6:45 a.m. Fri., Aug. 28 when a man wielding a knife stopped her, police said. The robber made off with the victim’s cell phone, drivers license and bank card.
