West Village fire

Firefighters brought a small fire in a second floor apartment at 130 Barrow St. under control in a half hour at 10 p.m. Sun. Aug 10 but five firefighters were taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in stable condition with respiratory injuries, a Fire Department spokesperson said. A sixth firefighter went to the hospital with a hand injury. Freon or a similar coolant escaping from a burning air conditioner in the five-story brick building may have caused the respiratory injuries, the spokesperson said.

BB shots in pool

Two women and a teenage girl at the Dry Dock swimming pool on E. 10th St. and Szold Pl. were hit by BB pellets fired by a unknown shooter at 6:43 p.m. Thurs. Aug. 7, police said. The victims refused medical attention and police are investigating the case.

Hudson River rescue

A 22-year-old man was pulled from the Hudson River near the W. 30th St. heliport at 12:24 p.m. on Sat. Aug. 9, police said. The victim was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for observation.

Shot on Allen St.

Police found a man with a gunshot wound in the stomach on the sidewalk on Allen St. between Broome and Grand Sts. at 4:20 a.m. Wed. Aug. 6. The victim, described only as a 22-year-old Asian man, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious but stable condition. Police are investigating the case.

Hate graffiti

A motorist who returned to his car parked at the curb on W. 20th St. just east of Ninth Ave. at 9 a.m. Thurs. Aug. 7 found a swastika scratched on the hood, according to police who are investigating it as a bias incident.

New housing chief

Assistant Chief Joanne Jaffe, former commanding officer of the First Precinct who also served in the Ninth and 13th Precincts, was promoted last week to chief of the Housing Bureau, making her the highest ranking female officer in N.Y.P.D. history.

The former Housing Bureau chief, Douglas Zeigler, became chief of the Organized Crime Control Bureau.

Chief Jaffe began her Police Department career in 1979 on patrol in the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn. In addition to commanding the First Precinct, she had commanded the 19th and 33rd Precincts in Manhattan. Just prior to her promotion she was head of the Office of Management Analysis and Planning. She has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s in forensic psychology from John Jay College and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
