Cruise ship rescue
A police helicopter responded to a Coast Guard call for help at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8 when a Brazilian woman, 90, a passenger aboard a cruise ship in the Ambrose Channel in lower New York Bay, was stricken with severe abdominal pain. The helicopter picked her up from the deck of the ship and brought her to Floyd Bennett Field where she was taken by ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital in Brooklyn. The woman was reported to be in stable condition.
Patz case
State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Kapnick last week declared in a civil case that the death of Etan Patz, a 6-year-old boy who disappeared from his home in Soho on his way to P.S. 3 in the Village on May 25, 1979, was the fault of Jose Ramos, a convicted child molester currently serving time in Pennsylvania. Etan was declared legally dead in 2001 but the criminal case is still open after 25 years. Ramos, a former boyfriend of Etan’s babysitter, has not admitted any connection to the case.
Justice Kapnick’s ruling, however, allows Etan’s father, Stanley Patz, to sue Ramos to prevent him from profiting from Etan’s death. The ruling may also be used to deny Ramos parole.
Crime-free fest
There were no arrests directly attributable to the Tribeca Film Festival May 1-9, said Capt. Michael Hurley, commanding officer of the First Precinct. At last year’s film festival, one man was arrested on a weapons charge when a metal detector at an event revealed he was carrying a handgun.
Assault arrest on Grand
Police who responded to a 1:18 a.m. call on Wed. May 5 to an apartment at 460 Grand St. about a fight between a man and a woman arrested Lik Chan, 39, and charged him with third degree assault. His victim was described only as a 32-year-old woman.
