Identity theft
Dominika Szymanska, 23, a waitress at The Tenement Restaurant, 157 Ludlow St., was arrested Thurs. June 16 and charged with stealing credit card identities and thousands of dollars from the restaurant’s customers, according to Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau’s office.
Szymanska is charged with identity theft and grand larceny by using a handheld embossing device to copy credit card information during the period between March 18 and June 12. Customers complained to credit card companies about being billed for purchases they did not make and the police Identity Theft Squad investigated the cases.
The owner of the restaurant, Paul Ujlaky, cooperated with police and the district attorney’s office the investigation. The defendant, a resident of Astoria, was freed on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 26.
East River DOA
Police retrieved the body of an unidentified woman from the East River near Pier 42 off Montgomery St. at 10:40 a.m. Thurs. June 16. The Medical Examiner’s office is investigating the cause of death of the victim described only as white and from 30 to 35 years old.
Strong arm on Canal
Two muggers attacked and robbed a motorist who was fixing a flat tire at 12:30 a.m. Mon. June 10 on Sixth Ave. at Canal St., police said. The victim told police that one of the robbers came from behind, grabbed his arm, reached into his pocket and took $185 while the other grabbed him by the neck and choked him.
Soho school arrests
The Chelsea Vocational High School students who were arrested for assault on Mon. June 13 as a resulted of disturbance on Thompson St. near Broome St. were identified as Akiem Fagon, 17, and Stedman R. Ferguson, 18, both of Brooklyn, and Michael Robinson, 17, of the Bronx.
The following day, three girls from the school on Sixth Ave. and Spring St. were charged with assault in connection with an 11:25 a.m. fight on Thompson and Spring Sts., according to Captain Anthony Bologna, First Precinct commanding officer.
The incidents occurred during the last week of the school year when restrictions on leaving the school building might not have been strictly enforced, Bologna said.
Assault on E. Broadway
A group of teenagers beat a 17-year-old victim at 8:40 p.m. Mon. June 20 on E. Broadway at Jefferson St., police said. The victim, Mitchell Hartfield, was taken to Bellevue for observation and released. The attackers, identified only as male Asian teenagers, fled and police are investigating the case.
Chinatown homicide
A shooting at Yung Sun Seafood restaurant on E. Broadway on Wed. June 17 ended in the death of Ming Wang, 43, owner of several New Jersey restaurants, according to law enforcement officials. Police are seeking a suspect, Cheng Sau Yong, 44, a New Jersey restaurant owner and a business rival of the victim.
First Precinct Council
The First Police Precinct Community Council will hold its annual election of officers and plan for the annual summer fundraising event at 6:30 p.m. Mon. June 27 in room 500 at New York Law School, 57 Worth St.
