Probe Village death
The death of Donna West, 60, whose body was found by her husband on his return to their Christopher St. apartment on Thurs. Nov. 16, is under investigation by the Medical Examiner’s Office, police said. Except for bruises around the elbows, there was no apparent sign of trauma, police said.
Hester St. fatal
Anthony Squero, 78, died after being struck by a car around 5:25 a.m. Sun. Nov. 19 as he was crossing Bowery at Hester St., police said. He was taken to New York Downtown Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The driver was not charged.
Diner shooting
A man who had just finished breakfast with a friend at Chelsea Square Restaurant at W. 23rd St. and Ninth Ave. at 5 a.m. Sat. Nov. 18 was shot in the foot during a chain-snatching incident, police said.
Two strangers emerged from a car parked across Ninth Ave., stopped the pair as they left the restaurant and snatched a chain from the victim, who resisted. One of the thieves pulled a gun and fired a shot that hit the victim in the foot. The robbers fled and the victim made his way back into the restaurant, where employees bound his bleeding foot. The victim was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he was described as being in stable condition.
Robbed on Broadway
A Brooklyn woman walking on Broadway at W. Houston St. at about 2:30 p.m. Wed. Nov. 8 was attacked from behind by a man who knocked her to the ground, snatched her bag and fled, police said. The victim, 20, who reported the incident to the 72nd Precinct when she got home to Brooklyn, lost $200 in cash, an mp3 player, a digital camera, a cell phone and a book. The thief was described as a white man, 6 feet tall, with short black hair and one eye brown and the other gray or blue.
It’s a bitch
The owner of Pop International Gallery, 473 Broadway, told police on Fri. Nov. 10 that an unknown thief made off with a painting valued at $25,000, “Dry Point Keith,” by Ronnie Wood, from an Oct. 27 exhibit at the gallery. The gallery owner told police the theft was first reported two weeks later because the gallery was so busy. A video surveillance camera shows activity in the gallery but does not record the images, police said. Wood, a guitarist with the Rolling Stones, markets his artwork through Scream Art.
Murder sentence
Clarence Hassan Mayfield, 16, one of four teenagers who pleaded guilty in the death last April of Broderick John Hehman, the New York University student who died when hit by a car in Harlem while fleeing a robbery, was sentenced to five years in a state juvenile detention facility.
Family Court Judge Mary Bednar imposed the sentence, which may be extended year by year until Mayfield, the oldest of the four defendants, is 21. Andre Johnson, 15, was previously sentenced to three years in juvenile detention, with year-by-year extensions possible until he is 21.The two other defendants, Humberto Guzman and Denzell Fell, both 14, were sentenced previously to 18 months in juvenile detention, with extensions possible until they are 18.
Shoplifter flees
A man arrested for shoplifting at a store on Christopher St. and Seventh Ave S. on Sat. evening Nov. 18 escaped in handcuffs from police and fled into the subway station, according to police. Trains on the 1, 2 and 3 lines were shut down as police chased the fugitive in vain. The fugitive, described as a 19-year-old Latino man, was not apprehended.
Gone from bag
A Soho resident, 36, was walking around Broome and Mercer Sts. Friday evening Nov. 10 when he discovered three credit cards and other documents that he was carrying in a gym bag had been stolen, police said. The victim told police he didn’t know exactly when the theft occurred and never saw anyone open the bag, which was zipped up. About $500 in unauthorized charges had been made on the cards.
Gone again
Another Soho resident carrying his expensive Helmut Lang wallet in his duffel bag on Tues. Nov. 14 discovered when he went to pay for lunch at a restaurant at 79 Greene St. that the wallet with $720 in cash, his New Jersey driver’s license and credit cards had been lifted, police said. The victim, 24, cancelled the credit cards but discovered that $200 in unauthorized charges had been made.
Woman sues bar
Jillian Tyler, 24, filed a civil lawsuit last week against Dewey’s Flatiron, 210 Fifth Ave., charging the bar’s bouncers stood by while she was attacked and severely beaten on Sept. 4 by a woman she had never met. Tyler and a friend had dropped into the bar at about 1:30 a.m. when Keisha Morrison got into an argument with Tyler’s friend and then launched an attack on Tyler, the suit says. Morrison was arrested at the time and faces assault charges. Tyler’s lawyer, David Dean, said the bouncers stood by for several minutes and allowed the assault — which left Tyler’s face, arms and back bloodied and lacerated — to continue.
