Wild ride on Houston
Two women fleeing from an attempted theft at a Prince St. clothing boutique on Fri., July 6, led police in a wild car chase on Houston St., nearly hitting one police officer, seriously injuring a pedestrian and sideswiping several cars, until their car blew a tire and they were arrested on First Ave. and Second St., police said.
Frances Channell, 32, was charged with grand larceny, and the driver of the car, Shauna King, was charged with assault, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident. Both were being held on bail pending court appearances on July 12 for King and July 13 for Channell.
Police said Channell was trying to buy four pairs of jeans and two jackets at the store on Prince St. near Broadway with a stolen credit card, but suspicious employees phoned police, who arrived just as Channell decided to leave without taking the clothes.
The suspect got into a red Nissan on Broadway and sped off, nearly hitting an officer on foot patrol and striking and injuring a 19-year-old pedestrian. The car didn’t stop until the tire blew on Second Ave. and First St., and the suspects ran. They were apprehended with the help of a witness on First Ave. and Second St.
Sentence Cipriani V.P.
Dennis Pappas, a vice president of Cipriani U.S.A., was sentenced to one and a half to four years in prison and ordered to restore $1,017,000 to insurance companies and the Social Security Administration. He pleaded guilty in May to attempted insurance fraud. Pappas worked for Cipriani beginning in 2000 until April of last year. The company owns the Rainbow Room and restaurants at the Toy Center on Fifth Ave. at 23rd St.; 376 W. Broadway; 55 Wall St. and other locations.
Hotel hubbub
Police arrested a man in the Gansevoort Hotel at 13th St. between Hudson St. and Ninth Ave. at 2:15 a.m. Sat., July 7, for assault for kicking a man after being ordered off the property for rowdy behavior, police said.
On Sun., July 8, a woman patron of the Gansevoort Hotel bar told police that someone had stolen her bag around 1 a.m. when she set it down for a moment.
Deli stabbing
An angry man waiting on a line to buy beer at a deli at 250 W. 14th St. stabbed another man on the top of his head at about 5:25 p.m. Tues., July 3, after an argument over cutting in front, police said.
Bags gone
A patron of the Garage Restaurant at Seventh Ave. S. and W. Fourth St. told police her bag was stolen at about 11 p.m. Mon., July 2, about 15 minutes after she put it down next to her chair.
A patron of Marie’s Crisis Café, 49 Grove St., told police that her bag, which she had placed on the bar, was stolen about 4:15 a.m. Sun., July 8, when she went to the ladies’ room.
Subway sex snatch
Police arrested Jasiri Walloe, 32, at about 5:20 a.m. Fri., June 29, on Mulberry St. near Spring St. and charged him with kidnaping and sexual abuse of a woman, 21, whom he found passed out drunk at the Brooklyn Bridge station of the Number 6 train. The suspect carried the victim onto a train, took her off at the Spring St. station and brought her to the vestibule of 214 Mulberry St., where he took off her shorts and underwear and molested her, waking her up. A suspicious witness who had followed the two off the train phoned police, who made the arrest before the suspect could flee.
Walloe, who has no permanent address, is being held pending an Aug. 29 court date.
Correction
The July 4 Police Blotter item in The Villager regarding a man and a woman arrested on Sat., June 30, on Avenue A between Ninth and 10th Sts. after shots were reported fired on E. 14th St., was not accurate. Deputy Inspector Dennis De Quatro, commander of the Ninth Precinct, said the couple had broken the window of a car in order to steal electronic equipment and that the sound of the window popping had been mistaken for gunfire.
Hate-assault arrest
Police arrested two suspects on Fri., July 6, in connection with the beating of two Asian men on Canal St. after shouting anti-Asian remarks on Monday evening July 2.
Steven Sackaris, 21, of East Atlantic Beach, and Michael Ostrosky, 29, of East Rockaway were charged with second- and third-degree assault. Police said they stopped their car on Canal St. at Baxter St. at 6:40 p.m., shouted anti-Asian remarks at a man, 22, crossing the street and got out and hit him when he responded. They also are charged with assaulting another Asian man, 24, standing nearby.
Both were released on their own recognizance pending a Nov. 8 court date.
Stabbed on Delancey
An argument that started in a pizzeria on Delancey St. near Ludlow St. at 6:40 a.m. Fri., July 6, ended in a stabbing outside the place a short time later, police said. The suspect and another man met the victim and his friend outside the place after the argument had ended and one of them stabbed the victim in the torso and fled. The victim was taken in serious condition to Downtown Hospital.
Old robbery arrest
Police arrested Dwayne Bouchen, 24, on Sun., July 7, and charged him with robbery and criminal impersonation of a police officer in connection with the Feb. 10, 2006, robbery of a jewelry store at 217 B Canal St. between Mulberry and Baxter Sts.
Bouchen is charged with being one of three suspects who told the store clerk they were police officers, pistol-whipped him leaving him permanently deaf, and made off with jewelry valued at $150,000. The other two suspects are still at large.
Bouchen is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail pending an Oct. 22 court date.
Watts St. burglary
A burglar entered a residence on Watts St. near Broome St. sometime between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thurs., July 5, and made off with cash and jewelry with a total value of $3,760, police said. The resident found the apartment door open, but it had not been forced open. Missing were two watches, two iPods and a set of high-end earphones, two digital cameras, a laptop computer and $200 in cash, police said.
Locker not locked
A patron of New York Sports Club at 503 Broadway between Spring and Broome Sts. discovered at 2:15 p.m. Mon., July 2, that his wallet had been stolen from his locker, which he had left unlocked while he was working out, police said. The victim, a Queens resident, told police the same thing had happed to him twice before.
