Fatal fall
A man believed to be a construction worker fell to his death around 7 p.m. Thurs., July 31, from the roof of a six-story building at 166 W. Fourth St. The victim, whose name was not released, plunged into the alley behind the building at the corner of Cornelia St., and died on his way to the hospital, police said. The Department of Buildings said there was no construction work being done at the building, in which Burrito Loco is the ground-floor tenant.
Forgery arrest
Police arrested a Bronx woman at 11:30 p.m. Sat., July 26, in the Washington Mutual bank branch at 340 Sixth Ave. at W. Fourth St. and charged her with possession of a forged document and attempted grand larceny.
The suspect, Gadson Yvonne, 54, presented a New Jersey driver’s license bearing her photo and the name of a Washington Mutual customer to a teller in an attempt to withdraw $20,000 from the customer’s account, according to a spokesperson for District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. The teller, however, managed to call police, who arrested the suspect.
Earlier in the day, $3,000 had been fraudulently withdrawn from the account, but Yvonne was not named as a defendant in that theft. She was released on $5,000 bail pending a Sept. 3 court appearance.
Beer bust
The clerk at a deli at 690 Greenwich St. near W. 10th St. called police on Mon., July 28, when he recognized a man who had taken several cans of beer the previous day and who had punched and kicked the clerk when he tried to stop him. Raymond Febres, 19, of the Bronx, had taken the beers at 4:45 a.m. Sun., July 27, and assaulted the victim on the way out, according to a spokesperson for D.A. Morgenthau. The suspect was also charged with resisting arrest after he refused to be handcuffed when arrested the following day, according to the charges.
Snatched cash
Police arrested Shane Pettaway, 31, on Fri., Aug. 1, at 7:30 p.m. on Sixth Ave. at W. Fourth St. and charged him with snatching $80 from a man’s hand. The victim, who had been counting his money at the time, demanded it back, but the suspect punched him, grabbed a cup of coffee from a trash basket and threw it in the victim’s face and started to flee, police said. Pettaway, of 57 Second Ave., was held in lieu of $5,000 bail pending an Aug. 7 court appearance.
Bank robbery
A man who walked into the Commerce Bank branch on Third Ave. near E. 10th St. around 6 p.m. Mon., July 28, passed a note to a teller demanding money and fled with an undisclosed sum. The robber was described as a balding white man about age 40 and weighing about 200 pounds.
Jumps to death
Frances Tracey, 53, the companion of Arnaldo Segarra, an aide to former Mayor David Dinkins, jumped to her death at about 6:45 a.m. Sun., Aug. 3, from the bedroom of the couple’s fifth-floor apartment on W. Eighth St. Segarra, 66, who recently retired from the staff of City Comptroller William Thompson, was in the bathroom shaving when Tracey opened the window and jumped to the rear courtyard below. There was no note, but the medical examiner ruled the death by blunt head trauma a suicide.
