Monday morning, the Police Department’s Motor Safety Carrier Unit set up a checkpoint on Broome St. just west of Lafayette St. They were looking for trucks using Broome St. as an alternate route from Brooklyn to New Jersey and other violations, such as bad brakes and expired registrations, plus illegal contents. Only Canal St. can be used by through trucks. Councilmember Alan Gerson, at left, stood watching as trucks were pulled over and inspected. “This is very important for the safety of the community. It’s important because they find accidents waiting to happen,” Gerson said. Officer Chad Rubenstrunk emphasized the inspections’ importance, recalling the truck that came barreling off the Manhattan Bridge several weeks ago, crashing into a Fung Wah bus and killing a pedestrian.
