The look of a popular stretch of Williamsburg is changing once again.

In November 2019, we noticed that a number of long-empty storefronts on North 6th Street were suddenly filling up. Warby Parker, Madewell, Everlane and others had recently moved in, transforming a block once populated by meat markets, then popular restaurants, clubs and singular boutiques.

But since the pandemic, a number of storefronts have emptied out and have been joined by new retail spaces that have yet to be filled.

At the moment there are at least 12 empty storefronts on North 6th between Bedford Avenue and Kent Avenue. The former home of North Face, seen above, is currently empty. Green construction fencing covers the exterior of the brick building.

Some of the spaces, like 106 North 6th Street, have been empty for a number of years. Most of the empty spaces on the street, though, are relatively new vacancies. They remain empty as businesses struggle during the pandemic.

Will retail return to North 6th Street as it did just a year ago? Or is its current state a sign of things to come?
